Hong Kong is the ultimate metropolis, a colourful whirl of kinetic lights, movement and energy, especially enchanting at night. From its skyscraper skyline to bustling laneways, buzzing traffic, illuminated boats and pulsing population, it’s one of the world’s most mesmerising cities, with a recent history that’s just as racy.
Commemorate the 20th anniversary of Britain’s handover of Hong Kong to China after 157 years of rule with Hong Kong-bred, NY-based, East-meets-West designer Vivienne Tam’s A/W 2017 collection. Capturing the flashing lights and neon glow of the city, her feisty new gear was unveiled at February’s New York Fashion Week, and can be found at eight stores across town.
Born in Guangzhou, China, Tam moved to Hong Kong aged three, and often takes inspiration from her homeland. Striking pieces include dresses in vibrant textiles resembling glimpsed bars of speeding traffic light or rainbow-bright neon signs, dare-to-wear bomber jackets depicting red taxis in a kaleidoscopic streetscape, and big-shouldered dragon-motif jackets with matching clutches. Teaming edgy streetwear with luxurious body-hugging gowns, the collection should appeal to youthful fashionistas keen to party.
Go glittery with sequins, lamé and metallic lace or play it safer with pared back, asymmetric, layered pieces that work a more androgynous feel. Cute airplane prints channel travel appeal, and there’s plenty of urban sparkle, sexy silhouettes and sophisti glamour to remind you of all those great nights out in HK!
