Happy Valley Racecourse
As the new season rears its head, we take you to the races the LUXE way with top tips for a quintessential Hong Kong night out...
Rivalling their passion for food and fashion, Hongkongers are obsessed with the gee gees. Whether it’s a love affair with glamour, speed, luck or simply placing a bet, fans flock to premier venue Happy Valley Racecourse, an historic skyscraper-ringed spot a skip from Wan Chai or Causeway Bay. Hosting races since 1846, it offers an electric atmosphere, attracting cheering locals, expats and visitors.
Arrive around 7pm at Members Gate E, show your passport and get a tourist ticket which lands you near the parade ring. Or, if it’s one of the popular Happy Wednesdays nights, go to Gate A for the Stable Bend Terrace set BBQ deal, which includes a buffet, drinks and a great view from the lofty, open-air terrace (dress code applies). A trackside Beer Garden with live band, and cocktail bar Adrenaline (L/2&3 / Pavilion Stand) are fun alternatives.
Smart fillies leave before the last race to avoid traffic. Drinks or supper after? There’s a nearby branch of vin et fromagerie Classified, or for simple local fare try Gi Kee.
For a more authentic, rough-around-the-edges experience, make for the massive Sha Tin Racecourse in the New Territories. Adventure seekers will love the mountainous backdrop and locals-dominated scene as the nags pound the turf.
Race days usually Wed/Sat/Sun, Sep-Jul.
