Musical Must-See

April 11, 2013
HK Chinese Orchestra

April is a busy month for Hong Kong audiophiles, what with the Philharmonic Orchestra’s anticipated Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, the musical adaptation of Hollywood blockbuster Dirty Dancing, and the beats of German producer Gregor Tresher who makes his Hong Kong debut, but if you can only make it to one venue this month, make sure it’s the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on April 12 or 13.

In a once-in-a-lifetime meeting of Chinese musical masterminds, the prestigious Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra will perform an exclusive two-night-run of Farewell, Snow In Summer and In The Thoughts, a programme featuring the exquisite pieces Autumn Execution, An Elegy – To My Beloved Wife, and Zhang Zhou’s Dreams, each work following the principal theme of sorrowful goodbyes.

HKCO’s Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Yan Huichang will partner with acclaimed Stage Director Chen Xinyi, who despite having retired 15 years ago once again steps into the spotlight, to deliver these three works from the famous Macanese composer Doming Lam, and Chinese composer Zhao Jiping, who is best known for producing the film scores for Chinese director Zhang Yimou’s celebrated films including Red Sorghum and Farewell, My Concubine. With so many distinguished collaborators in the mix, it’s sure to be a night you’ll be sorry to say goodbye to.
