Go MSG-free!

January 12, 2015

Foxtail & Broomcorn

Hong Kong’s health-conscious are often wary of the city’s pervasive hole-in-the-wall establishments – especially in the gloriously gritty Sheung Wan – as popular belief decrees their plates have been dusted with more MSG than you’d find flour in a bakery. With that in mind, shiny new lunchbox Foxtail & Broomcorn has set many a tum at ease with flavour-packed, noodly fare made entirely free of the vile, fiendishly moreish additive.

Slink up early for a pew in the modish, intimate 28-seat boite of aquamarine and mirrored walls with painted metal high stools, a striated marble bar and grey wooden floors. Hearty, soul-warming bowls include the Tokyo (fresh ramen, onsen egg, and harissa beef ribs lightly brewed in a sticky chicken broth), the Amoy (rice noodles with fish fillets and parmesan chips in a fish stock), and the cold Hoi An (shirataki and vanilla salmon in a spicy Vietnamese nuoc cham soup). Or if noodles + white shirt = bad idea, plump for tidier options like the ginger yoghurt-dressed prawn salad with pomelo and sweet potatoes. Add to that fruity house-made tea infused with passion fruit, apple and grapefruit, plus Moonzen’s Jade Emperor IPA and a couple of French pours, and you’ve got our favourite new lunchtime go-to. Fab and MSG-free!
