Exploring Yuen Long

December 10, 2017

If you’ve already ticked off the island trails, scoped out the city’s southern coastline and found yourself itching for more adventure, why not head to one of the lesser-known pockets of the New Territories? With its combination of heritage, nature and serene escapes, the northwestern district of Yuen Long is the perfect destination for cultural nature-loving daytrippers alike.

What: Ping Shan Heritage Trail

Best For: Culture vultures

First stop is the picturesque Ping Shan Heritage Trail which extends just over 1km through a low-rise residential area. Originally built by the Tang clan, who were thought to have settled in the area during the 12th century, this trail meanders past a series of well-preserved ancestral halls, temples and courtyards. It’s one of the few locations where the distinct, grey-stone architectural style, reminiscent of a bygone era, can be found in HK.

What: Nam Sang Wai

Best For: A little R&R

Leisure seekers looking to soak up Yuen Long’s green scenes should head to Nam Sang Wai, a low-lying, wetland area surrounded by the Kam Tin and Shan Pui Rivers. It’s home to a 8km circuit, which can be explored on foot, or better yet, by bike - pick up some rental wheels at Ting Fung Bicycle Shop located 3 minutes from Yuen Long MTR station. Glide past sparkling ponds, peek into abandoned fish farms, or, if you’d rather take a gentler approach, it’s an ideal spot to watch birds and other forms of wildlife – on weekends, expect to be joined by local shutterbugs snapping them in their natural habitat.

What: Wetland Park

Best For: Families

Little nippers in tow? You’ll find plenty of activities to help keep temper-tantrums in check, including a visit to the Wetland Park. Situated next to the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay Ramsar Site, it’s home to a fascinating Visitor Centre where you can learn all about wetland biodiversity, civilisation and conservation across a range of themed, family-friendly exhibitions. Little ‘uns can even get up close and personal with dragonflies, butterflies, amphibians and Nemo and co. on one of the outdoor guided jaunts. That’s edu-tainment!
