Style snoops will already be tuned into Hong Kong’s newest hot spot, the West Kowloon Cultural District. This vibrant developing quarter, on a dramatic harbourfront site in the heart of Hong Kong, is the future home of Herzog + de Meuron’s 2019 M+ Museum for contemporary visual culture, plus a host of performing arts venues, but there’s plenty to entertain you right now. We highlight inspiring February events...
Catch Shifting Objectives: Design from the M+ Collection at the mirrored M+ Pavilion (until 5 Feb). M+’s debut design exhibition curates key objects from mid-C.20th Japanese furniture to pieces from HK’s manufacturing heyday, copied goods, digital works, open-source innovations and drones, exploring how design concepts have evolved. Major names in the frame include Sori Yanagi, Ettore Sottsass, Jasper Morrison, Front and Nendo.
Join the feisty Freespace Happening in Nursery Park (12 Feb) for an invigorating afternoon of music and dance. Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra’s percussionists will belt out classical and pop tunes, alongside all-female Japanese taiko drum group O. Daiko. Experience mind-expanding Tibetan Chanting Bowls, family-friendly meditation sessions, a fortune-telling poet and a performance/party for the WE Dance Finale by local dance troupes.
Another free event on Nursery Park’s lawns is Kwai Tsing Daily (26 Feb), which explores the human stories behind this urban district of factories, estates, highways and container ships. Enjoy an old-style market, street food, games, performances and displays by master craftsman, as this oft-overlooked ‘hood shares its culture.
