If we had a penny for every time we heard the words ‘concept store’ used to describe a new boutique, why, we’d have rather a collection of coins. However, swank Sheung Wan shop Château Zoobeetle more than lives up to this summation. In fact it has practically succeeded in bottling and bartering the very essence of what it is to be French – l’art de vivre – with a little Parisian insouciance thrown in for good measure.
The split-level 1400-sq-ft store sits on an achingly trendy PoHo side street (natch), with interiors dreamed up by uber hip cats Substance to match. Founded by – you guessed it – three young Gallic entrepreneurs with gimlet eyes for the finer things in life, the brand curates a superb selection of fine foods, RTW fashion from the likes of Amish Boyish and Cuisse de Grenouille, music and wine (plus tastings), as well as their own line of leather goods.
Sisters Elsa Lepeu and Johanna El Iman, who boast a background at Chloé and Lancel, no less, have developed the house brand, capturing the effortless elegance that only the French can fathom and translating it into a collection of handbags, wallets, purses and more.
That leaves it to the marvellously monikered former rec exec Junior Parado to look after the aural offering, presenting a clever curation of indie and electro rarities and vinyl. Chât-ooooh!
