Culture vultures will be in heaven as Hong Kong’s dynamic Art Basel 2017 takes over town 21-25 March. The Peninsula is at the heart of the action, hosting a series of art-inspired events, dubbed Love Art at The Peninsula, including an installation, top-notch talk and curated dining and drinks.
Acclaimed talent Sir Michael Craig-Martin – The Godfather of Brit Art – is spearheading the fourth edition of Love Art with London’s Royal Academy of Arts. Known for vibrant, line-art works depicting everyday objects, Craig-Martin will unveil a new sculptural installation, “Bright Idea 2016”, a giant yellow steel lightbulb, by The Pen’s Fountain on 20 March (until 31 May), with fresh paintings displayed at the first-floor exhibition space. The same evening, he’ll discuss his influential career at Hong Kong University with RA Artistic Director Tim Marlow, a seriously hot ticket.
Consuming exciting art continues with art-accented dining at the hotel’s lofty, Starck-designed Felix restaurant (13 March to 16 April). Chef Yoshiharu Kaji’s exclusive five-course Love Art set menu takes its cue from modern art and seasonal produce, with creations named after operatic experiences. Dishes include The Queen of the Night Aria, featuring caramelised pigeon breast and duck liver, and Le Fantome de l’Opéra, a buttery roasted John Dory, plus a lightbulb-topped Peach Melba (from HK$1,388 per person). Love Art cocktails pay homage to works by YBAs Craig-Martin, Gary Hume and Damien Hirst. Sm-art!
