Three Times Lucky

June 19, 2014
Aberdeen Street Social

First there was London’s Pollen Street Social, then Shanghai’s Commune Social, and now, finally, celebrity chef Jason Atherton has swung open the doors to Hong Kong’s convivial Aberdeen Street Social. Atherton is no stranger to the HK dining scene, having successfully opened Wan Chai tapas joints 22 Ships and Ham & Sherry, but this marks his first British outfit in our fair city – and what a vision she is, housed in the revitalised, design-centric edifice that is the PMQ (the historic Police Married Quarters), in a two-storey Neri & Hu space with dark wood surfaces, tufted leather seats, and a hypnotising installation piece of swirling barbershop poles by renowned artist Adrian Wong.

In agreeable weather, take a perch on the idyllic upstairs balcony, and order a signature cocktail like the ‘Bloody English’, an updated Bloody Mary with Sipsmith Gin, Bristol Cream Sherry, and a garnish of eggs and cherry tomato on toast, while you peruse the menu. It’s filled with Atherton’s signature modernised British plates like roasted quail breast with confit leg, sautéed foie gras and peach chutney, or juicy braised ox cheeks with bone marrow. To finish, opt for a sinful apple and pear-based dessert with caramel toffee, brown butter and tamarind by award-winning pastry chef Andres Lara, whose decadent creations are also available to-go at the in-house patisserie Sweet Social. British hospitality done right!
