A Multisensory Meal

The term ‘art on a plate’ is oft applied to picture-perfect gourmand offerings, but recently opened multi-sensory art space The Popsy Room takes the notion of edible art to a whole new level. The Sheung Wan gallery-cum-eatery provides guests with an immersive sensory experience by combining visual art, sound installations, scented motifs and a five course meal to create an overarching artistic theme that commands the use of all five senses.

Each bi-monthly exhibition starts with founder and director Jennifer Chung assembling a thematic collection of visual works including paintings, photography and other media by various artists. She and the artists then collaborate with musicians, sound technicians and resident chef Kaze Lo (formerly of Caprice and Cepage) to create auditory and gustatory elements that reinforce and enhance each piece. Past degustation dinners have seen an abstract, marine-inspired painting by Manuel Rubio teamed with shiso leaf and sea urchin cadeau; and a squid ink and scallop linguini paired with modern monochrome drawings by Hong Kong artist Yan Yung. Diners will need to book well ahead for the full dinner experience but visitors can always nip into The Popsy Room during the day when the art and sound elements are still on show, teamed with fragrances, aromatic teas and light nibbles to sate your senses as you ponder the paintings.
