Hong Kong E- Prix

November 06, 2017
A Gent's Getaway

In town for the Hong Kong E-Prix? Let us point you in the right direction, starting with a mini debrief on this new-fangled electric motorsport, followed by our pick of the best restaurants, bars, private clubs, tailors, and groomers for the perfect gent's weekend. Suits you, sir!

The E-Prix

Back to the future, baby: leccy-powered cars are the way forward, as the Hong Kong E-Prix proves. This new form of racing usually involves 10 teams of two drivers; races take place on temporary city-centre street circuits, which span 2-3.4km. The 2017 Hong Kong E-Prix will be held on 2 and 3 December, kickstarting the Formula E season. Expect two races this year instead of one – making Hong Kong the first Asian city to host a doubleheader.

Mosey on over to the purpose-built urban track at the Central Harbourfront, backdropped by iconic landmarks such as the International Finance Centre, Hong Kong Observation Wheel and Hong Kong City Hall. We’re getting revved up just thinking about it. You’ll need some pointers when it comes to off-track lures, too; here are some for starters.

Get fed…

The China Club. Sir David Tang’s members-only 1930s Shanghai joint features antique everything, from the furniture to the barmen, not to mention an unrivalled collection of Chinese art and literature. Take pre or posts in the Long Bar or on the twinkly roof terrace, then dine on the main floor or in one of the hushed private rooms. A good concierge will get you in, Jim.

The Pawn. The Fragrant Harbour's mod Brit stalwart still delivers on ace-but-exxe bistro fodder; if prices prove a little too irksome for a full-blown food-fest, snag a seat on the bar's perf people-watching verandah and get nouveau pub snacky instead.

Get watered…

The Envoy.
This preppy, East-West imbiber inside the poised Pottinger aces colonial charm; there’s a stately dining room replete with tufted sofas and heavy marble, plus cha-infused cocktails. In clement weather conditions, take your sips al-frisky on the breezy, urbania-engulfed terrace.

Butler. Dedicated sipsters brave crossing to the dark side (aka Kowloon) for meticulously crafted Nippon cocktails at this bijou imbiber. Karate-chop/charm your way past the Japanese salarymen for one of only a handful of seats. Hi-ya!

Get suited n’ booted…

Berne Horology.
Step into this Ali Baba's magical cave, replete with timeworn but honoured, vintage Rolex, Patek Philippe and Jaeger-LeCoultre. Ask Berne’s timelord and main man Johnny Ng to show you his antique hoard.

The Armoury. If it's clothes and not manners that make the man, then many a fellow has been formed, fitted and finished at this one-stop artisanal boutique. Go on: get your smooth on.

Kow Hoo. The secret to Sammy Davis Jr's well-heeled success? A pair of custom-made kicks from the lone, now-octogenarian cobbler at Kow Hoo. Step out in style with a pair of bespoke classic shoes made just for you(r tootsies).

Get groomed…

Gentlemen’s Tonic. This mod man's barber dishes up treats, tonics and urbane grooming in macho-minimalist taupe pinstripe and panelled surrounds. Something for the weekend, sir?
