How to… Survive Rainy Season

May 15, 2017

We round up our fave pastimes to help you while away the soggy season in Hong Kong.

Pamper yourself with some seductive spa downtime. For an instant mood-booster pop to The Peninsula Spa, where the indulgent Peninsula Afternoon Tea & Spa starts with a 90-minute aromatherapy body massage and wraps up with elegant signature tea.

For a cheap ‘n easy alternative, relaxing Central retreat Ten Feet Tall offers aromatic oil and pressure point massages, plus reflexology.

Learn about the Territory’s origins at family-fun Hong Kong Museum of History in Tsim Sha Tsui, which hosts a permanent exhibition about the city’s natural landscape, folk culture and heritage, plus rotating shows (kitschy The Legend of Hong Kong Toys wraps up on 15 May, with opening hours extended until 8pm).

Settle in for a movie at hip Broadway Cinematheque in Yau Ma Tei, a vibey Kowloon neighbourhood full of retro cafes, temples and markets. This iconic cinema is perfect for a rainy day, with cool Kubrick café/bookstore for idling away the avo. Films are usually shown in their original language with Chinese and/or English subtitles, with May offerings including thriller Get Out and swashbuckler King Arthur Legend of the Sword.

Who cares if it’s wet outside if you’re roaming multi-level PMQ, the 1950s-built former Police Married Quarters complex off Hollywood Road? Pick up edgy local jewellery, accessories, fashion, books and homewares, or check out regular pop-ups and festivals. Dine on healthy Sino comfort food at Sohofama or go mod-Brit at Aberdeen Street Social.
