You On The Moors Now

Theatre troupe The Hypocrites unveil their 20th season with the Chicago premiere of a 2015 comedy by New York playwright Jaclyn Backhaus. Devon de Mayo directs You on the Moors Now, which sees iconic female characters from C.19th English and American fiction – Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, and Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women – banding together to escape their period's social constraints.

Crazy, funny and feisty, the play is set in a mythical place of Moors. As the women rebuff marriage proposals, the men retaliate, starting the Moors Wars, which all culminates in a rather moving ending. The production is “a feminist re-imagining of the lives of the heroines of four of the greatest literary novels by women,” says director de Mayo. “It reminds us of the importance of the strong female protagonist, and asks, ‘What if she didn’t need the dude? Like, at all?’ And ‘What if a woman’s friendship with other women is what drives her? Not her relationship with men.’”

The play assembles a talented cast, including Tien Doman (Elizabeth Bennet), Deanna Myers (Jo March), Emjoy Gavino (Cathy) and BrittneyLove Smith (Jane Eyre), alongside key male counterparts Desmond Gray (Mr Darcy), Maurice Demus (Laurie Laurence), Japhet Balaban (Heathcliff) and Josh Odor (Mr Rochester). Expect to see the classics ripped up in a witty, empowering and entertaining way. One for lovers of fiction, theatre and revolution…

Until 30 Oct, 2016.
