Master of All Trades

November 21, 2013

Jack of all trades, master of none, as the old adage goes, but to every rule there’s usually an exception, and fashion designer Tom Ford – a man who manages to garner success whatever he turns his hand to – is one such example. After earning a degree in architecture, working for a spell as an actor (once featuring simultaneously in 12 ad campaigns), Ford was eventually responsible for the almost single-handed turnaround of faltering Italian fashion house Gucci, and went on to critical acclaim for his directorial film debut A Single Man. So it was only a matter of time before the handsome chap turned his talent to conceptualising his own label TOM FORD, with the latest in a line of stores opening in Chicago.

The swish Oak Street flagship spans over two levels of mirrored columns, blue de savoie marble floors, silk rugs and suede sofas, and showcases his entire collection from outlandish accessories (like a $10,000 pair of diamond-studded skull-shaped cufflinks), and heady fragrances including Arabian Wood, Neroli Portofino, and a cologne containing orchids from Ford’s own garden, to a cutting edge selection of mens and womenswear. Keep an eye out for next season’s covetable Barbarella-esque, sheer mini-dress encrusted with shards of mirror, and a fabulous cache of embroidered silk dinner jackets for gents, both of which have already met with approbation on the catwalk – nothing succeeds like success!
