Taste of Chicago
Where can you sample a smorgasbord of Chicago’s best food? For a one-stop eatathon, get thee to lakefront lovely Taste of Chicago, the nation’s top outdoor foodie festival – and the world’s largest – guaranteeing you a slice of the city’s diverse culinary allures.
The godfather of gourmet returns for five days (Wed-Sun) in July with myriad tastings, pop-up restaurants, chef demos, stalls, podcasts and live music. Since 1980, verdant Grant Park has hosted Taste, so you know the drill: trade tickets to savour Chicago's street fare.
Alongside more than 30 restaurants cooking up a storm, you’ll find blink-n-you’ll-miss-em pop-ups just here for a day or two, with 11 newbies to discover, including Doom Street Eats, Pork and Mindy’s, and Taco in a Bag. Cuisines stretch from Belize to Ethiopia via Japan and Mexico. The food truck muster also sports six new names – we can’t resist The Happy Lobster Truck – with a beer hall, wine garden and cocktail lounge for quenching that thirst.
Bands at Petrillo Music Shell provide the soundtrack while you devour your fried chicken, rainbow cone or deep dish pizza, including The Isley Brothers, Billy Idol and The Decemberists (buy tickets online), or enjoy free tunes at the Bud Light Stage. Pay for a sit-down three-courser with a celeb chef in the dining pavilion, or just arrive early, unfurl a picnic blanket on the lawn and dig in!
