Chill Out, Warm Up

February 15, 2016
How to...Stay Warm This Winter
Winter in the Windy City offers about as much warmth as Al Capone’s smile. But there are still ways to avoid the snow, sleet and screaming Lake Michigan gales of a Midwest deep freeze. Here are our top tips to keep you toasty warm...

The first rule to avoiding the Chi-town chill: invest in a good overcoat. Your Burberry trench ain’t going to cut it here, dear. Instead, stay stylish and snug in one of Moncler’s Michelin Man-esque puffy parkas. Dash over to the Oak Street boutique and ensconce yourself in a fluffy, down-filled and water-repellant nylon number complete with fox fur-trimmed hood and weatherproof fixtures. Cosy, Rosie.

Or, if you’d rather avoid layering up on arctic-appropriate apparel, simply escape the elements altogether with some indoor exploits. You can lose a whole day inside the vast Art Institute of Chicago, which houses some 300,000 works across ten curated collections. The Renzo Piano-designed Modern Wing is a must for its roll call of C.20th icons, including Picasso's Old Guitarist and Wood's American Gothic, plus you’ll find assemblages covering everything from Byzantine murals and medieval armour to Native American textiles, prints and photography. Certainly a sm-art way to spend a cold day.

And then, of course, there are the all-important, insulation-building sups and sips. Heat up with some spicy bites from sprawling food hall Latinicity, offering everything from oozy cheese cocas to hearty black bean sopas, then on to cocktail kitchen Bottlefork for a Hot Cocoa Azteca – a flaming mix of crème de cacao, chile de arbol and milk, all topped with a marshmallow.

Finally, finish with nightcaps somewhere a little closer to home. The Bar, secreted away on the fifth floor of The Peninsula, offers top-shelf single malts to be enjoyed in front of a roaring fire. Brrr! Doesn’t that just warm your cockles?
