Go Green With The Fam

March 06, 2017
St Patrick's Day For Kids!

It’s the most fun your family can have while going green! With citywide celebrations taking place on the Saturday before the official St Patrick’s Day on 17 March, LUXE guides you through the perfect day out in Chicago with your own little leprechauns...

First, get kitted with the obligatory tacky but mega-fun ‘Irish’ attire at Chicago Costume in Lincoln Park, stocking everything imaginable, from shamrock T-shirts to emerald-green wigs. You may feel silly at first, but Chicagoans really go to town on the dress-up front, so you’ll feel even sillier when you’re stood there in chinos and a bland polo.

Arrive early to snag a good view of the famous (eco-friendly) Chicago River-dyeing ritual, which takes place in The Loop at 9am on the morning of the parade. Top spots for taking in the colourful action are the east side of Michigan Avenue, the west side of Columbus Drive, or upper and lower Wacker Drive between Michigan Ave and Columbus Drive.

Chi-town’s jaunty homage to the Irish saint’s day continues at noon with the St Patrick’s Day Parade starting at Balbo and Columbus Drive, heading north through Grant Park on Columbus and up to Monroe Street. Bagpipes, drum corps and Irish dancers will amuse you and the smalls over the course of about three hours. There’s also a viewing stand by Buckingham Fountain (book online).

You must be famished! Afterwards, hop in a cab and scoot up to River North (10 mins away), where laid-back fam-friendly Wildfire awaits with an extensive kids’ menu including easy favourites like meatballs or cheese pizza… plus a top selection of Martinis for the grown-ups. Or head over to Pierrot Gourmet for some authentic Celtic classics like Shepheard’s Pie, Slow-Roasted Corned Beef and Cabbage and Whisky Corned Beef Hash.  If you’re looking to satisfy your sweet tooth, enjoy some of Pierrot Gourmet’s famous pastries, featuring an Irish twist like an Irish Coffee Éclair or a Clover Macaron, just to name a few.
