Gent’s Retreat

Sportsman's Club

Conserving a place’s history can often add depth to any new rendition, an idea that dream F&B team Matt Eisler and Kevin Heisner (Bangers & Lace, Trenchermen, Lone Wolf) must have had in mind when they combined forces to create Sportsman's Club. Taking over from what was once an atmospheric Polish ‘dive bar’, they’ve taken pains to restore the booths and gorgeous wooden Art Deco bar that imposingly spans the room, as well as to maintain the dimly lit, cosy vibe via a gent’s club theme complete with mounted deer heads, tweed cladding and chess boards engraved on the tables.

But what really has the patrons pouring in is the cocktail edit – four daily offerings, as well as the signature Sportsman's Cocktail, that have in the past included mixtures of ginger beer and bourbon; whiskey, Fernet, simple syrup and angostura; and gin, vermouth, and maraschino. Another real standout is the chilled amaro shot machine, which includes Cynar, Fernet-Branca, Averna and Cocchi Rosa, or else the savvy staff are happy to whip up tailor-made creations based on your flavour preferences. Just five beers are on offer, from Old Style to Grande Dame, and to-go goods, such as Old Granddad whiskey, wine, and bitters, are available to buy from a cabinet next to the door. Booze to go, tally ho!
