Sips at Saks

April 25, 2014

Good news for fashionistas in seek of chic mid-retail respite at Chicago’s Saks Fifth Avenue – new on-site restaurant Sophie’s, named for the New York-based luxury department store’s long-time lead designer – is serving up light bites and elevated bistro fare for that all-important shopping energy boost. Take the express elevator directly to the 7th floor, and you will immediately be greeted with sweeping Magnificent Mile vistas from the 1,600 sq ft, Andre Kikoski-designed diner’s floor-to-ceiling windows.

For the ultimate indulgence, settle into either the white leather chairs or two-tone banquettes and sip on one of their seasonally-inspired cocktails (try the Rhubarb Basil Gimlet), before savouring one of Fairmont Chicago chef Rion Aleman’s locally-inspired dishes. As befits a restaurant peddling the hautest designer wear, the menu is decidedly waistline-friendly: think salt-crusted baby beets with gorgonzola, pecan caramel and an orange-yuzu vinaigrette; and pan-seared North Atlantic salmon served with a carroty mascarpone sauce. But if you’re in the mood for a splurge (dietary and otherwise), round it off with an order of triple chocolate cake with salted peanut butter mousse and meringue crunch, or a croissant-based coconut bread pudding with vanilla bean chantilly cream. At the very least, you’ll be fully energised and ready to complete that shopping spree!
