We love a buzzworthy bar or restaurant, especially when you get two for the price of one! Recently opened West Loop double act (or double trouble, depending on your mood) Smyth & The Loyalist is just such a dynamic duo, offering two floors of complementary drinking and dining.
Fancy fine dining with an intimate fit-out? Head upstairs to upscale, 40-seat restaurant Smyth, a gourmet wonderland by former Charlie Trotter’s/Alinea chefs John and Karen Shields. Enjoy eight- or 12-course Japanese-influenced tasting menus, championing seafood and locally farmed veg, herbs and flowers. Think Dungeness crab and foie gras with scrambled kani miso. Sip on fine wines or rare spirits, perfect for that special occasion. Warm wood-accented mid-century-modern decor creates a chic home-from-home feel.
Prefer to cut loose? Ground-floor The Loyalist is a relaxed 80-seat bar/restaurant, with booths, a bar, lounge, TV for sports updates and fireplace. Knock back a shot and beer combo (Lone Star and Old Gran-Dad), sample local craft beers or savour seasonal cocktails whipped up by head bartender Roger Landes.
Chef de cuisine Mark Bolton’s familiar but smartly done mains tick off gourmet staples – The Loyalist cheeseburger with fries or an aged ribeye with brown butter and black garlic – as well as kookier fare such as broiled sea trout with kasu and charred cucumber. Quirky desserts include lemongrass sundae with blueberries and salted black liquorice. They’ve certainly earned our loyalty!
