When he saw famed vocalist Junior Wells live in concert, Milan native Tony Manguillo was so inspired that he quickly booked a plane ticket to global blues capital Chicago in 1978, but little could he have known that this chance encounter and subsequent journey would one day lead to his establishing what the New York Times would later crown Chicago’s Best Blues Club.
Since 1984, clued-in fans have gravitated to Manguillo’s hideaway Rosa’s Lounge for its legendary lineup, with headlining names like harmonicist Billy Branch, Delta guitarist David ‘Honeyboy’ Edwards, and Grammy Lifetime Award-winning pianist Pinetop Perkins just a few of those to have famously taken the stage. Now celebrating its 30th year in operation, the venue continues to produce programs that attract music lovers to its dimly lit, wooden-barred, monochrome print-lined confines. And fittingly, for the milestone month of September, the intimate stage in back will see a rotating roster of suitably high-profile performances including the classic guitar riff stylings of James Wheeler, festival favourite Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials, and a Time is Running Out world tour pitstop from Indiana band Kinsey Report. Not a bad result for a simple blues fan from Milan!
