Utter the words ‘Bavarian beer hall’ and all manner of lederhosen-laden boomsadaisy imagery springs quickly to mind. But this is 2014, the age of the craft ale and ultra-hip aficionado uprising, so it’s fair to say the traditional novelty concept has taken a turn for the trendy. Case in point, new Logan Square brew house The Radler, where in place of kitsch décor and busty blonde servers, beer-lovers will find an upscale, vintage-inspired drink n’ diner replete with art-splashed walls, dark wood furniture and a trio of elegant antique grandfather clocks sitting pretty behind the bar.

Though elevated (nigh on reinvented), this nouveau beer hall’s focus remains squarely on the beverage and food offering, with 20 draught beers (Pilsner-Urquell, Haus Helles), bottled lagers and ales (Einbecker Winter-Bock, Mikkeller Willamette IPA), rotating, locally-brewed ‘haus’ beers, wine, and craft cocktails including The Tourist made with Espolon Reposado, St. Germain and Yellow Chartreuse. The menu represents the best and the ‘wurst’ of the Fatherland, with barley malt butter pretzels, Brussels sprout and duck fat confit, German onion pie, veal schnitzel with mulled pinot noir, and housemade sausages including smoked knockwurst, seared boarwurst and poached weisswurst. And not a dirndl in sight – wunderbar!
