Market Sent Packing

July 10, 2014
Packing House

Spread over three expansive floors with a summer ready terrace, straight-up pub grub, cheap beer, and wall-to-wall TVs, brassy sports bar Market was a sure hit in the space stakes but a miss with the upmarket Randolph Row crowd. Since it shuttered last year, however, new management promptly moved in, overhauling the concept but taking full advantage of the space to bring us Packing House. The first floor has been transformed into a smart 125-seat diner of dove-grey booths and glass-encased fireplaces; the second into a modern, vibey bar dotted with flat screens, plus a terrace with retractable roof; and finally, upstairs is a sleek new rooftop hang with lounge-worthy sofas and 360° views of the city.

Chef Amanda Barnes (Moto, The Publican, Purple Pig) presents a Med-inflected take on modern American fare with a menu including cheese and charcuterie boards of bresaola, lardo, roquefort, and pecorino; roast chicken with jalapeños, smashed fingerlings, and a soy-caramel drizzle; and hand-tossed pizzas topped with bacon, gruyere, farm eggs and chives. Gone are the shots and swill; here to stay is a slinky lineup of cocktails like the Pear Bear mixed with Anjou pear vodka, raspberry liqueur, rosemary essence, lime and orange juice, and grapefruit bitters, and an impressive array of European brews (think La Chouffe, Wells Banana Bread). Home run!
