Newberry Library Book Fair
It’s all very well clicking through your sterile Kindle, but it’s hard to beat old-school print books when it comes to indulging your inner bookworm soul. If you need to load up on some inspiring tomes to take you from the L train to Chicago’s lakeside, then get thee to the Newberry Library Book Fair.
The name may not sound like the sexiest thing since sliced bread, but believe us when we say you’ll pick up some classic summer reads at this rave-busy book bonanza. The Newberry has been Chicago’s independent research library since 1887, and its 32nd annual book fair sees brainy bods making a beeline to the Gold Coast.
Free to the public, the four-day fair is one of the largest used-book sales in the country, with choices spanning everything from fiction, art and collectibles to cookbooks and children's lit. With more than 120,000 secondhand books, movies, records and more across 70 categories, you’re bound to find something to tickle your fancy, with prices starting from as low as $3 or under for a bargain. All the books have been donated by well-wishers to support the library.
Keep up with all the fair action on the book fair blog, helmed by ‘Uncle Blogsy’, or access a preview night – and shop the fair before it opens to the public – by signing up as a member (Authors level or above).
