Diamond in the Rough

August 24, 2015
Mineralogy
While most of us spent our earth science lessons staring into space or doodling in our textbooks, metalsmith Theresa Cowan had the foresight to actually listen. And what she learned has proved invaluable… It turns out that not only does Mother Nature yield some pretty impressive rewards, but if you harness your own creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, she’ll let you reap the benefits too.

But before you jump online to enroll in an evening course, check out Cowan’s brand new bricks-n-mortar boutique Mineralogy; you’ll soon find out that she’s done the hard work so you don’t have to.

Her artisanal jewellery brand has evolved from its humble bedroom-based beginnings to become a highly coveted collection of one-of-a-kind body baubles showcased at the North Center flagship. Handcrafted from ethically sourced gemstones (including conflict-free diamonds) and recycled 14k gold, silver, brass and filigree, each of Cowan’s seductively subtle statement designs is completely unique in that it takes in nature’s own aberrations.

The results are nostalgic and whimsical – unusual combinations of raw natural ice and turquoise with hammered gold, or two-tone chrysoprase earrings, for example.

She makes everything on-site in the adjoining atelier, and, as well as peddling her own wares, presents a lovely list of paper goods, wall art, apothecary items, homewares and ceramics. A real gem!
