Contemporary Tavern

January 16, 2014
Lone Wolf

Trying for a table at any of Randolph Street’s clutch of popular restaurants like Girl and the Goat, Au Cheval, Little Goat Diner or Avec can be hit or miss, and more often than not involve a mobile phone number and a wait (for those without reservations). But thankfully, for those very occasions, the perfect pre-or post perch has come along in the shape of Lone Wolf. This spacious, contemporary tavern’s warm wood fitout, black leather booths and welcoming vibe is an excellent antidote to fine dining’s formality, with a tightly-edited craft beer and digestif-led cocktail list, plus a homely, artisan snack attack menu.

The 7 house signature drinks are a concise study in citrusy, sorbet/prosecco sgrippinos, amaro-based digestifs like the Seven Sisters spiked with chartreuse, the Bicicletta blending Campari with dry white wine and club soda, and the frothed eggwhite Giralamo Sour with lemon juice and Luxardo amaro abano. When the tum rumbles start you can stave them off with Scotch eggs, Welsh rarebit, and a suite of seriously good Pleasant House Bakery ‘Royal’ pies like chicken balti and mushroom and kale, and don’t forget the craft beers like the four drafts from cult fave Three Floyds. Pie and a pint? Cancel the restaurant reservation.
