If ever there were a perfect situ for a male other half’s birthday dinner, a budding bromance catch-up, a father’s day surprise or boy’s long lunch – this is it. Chicago’s Hunter & Tails, a new Humboldt Park gastropub heavy on the beer, wood and meat, also places an emphasis on locally-sourced, sustainably-farmed ingredients, and thoroughly guy-friendly vibes. The bi-level space comprises a downstairs bar with high tables and exposed beams, plus a more date-friendly upstairs dining room if indeed the gals decide to join.

The menu reads like a campfire fantasy: sautéed Bang mussels with a Butcher & Larder sausage, and applewood char-grilled shrimp to start; then 21 day-aged grass fed steak with a red wine reduction and creamy whipped potatoes, and line caught fish served with a potato, squash, tomato and leek chowder follow on as mains. But if a pound of flesh is not your ideal dinner – fear not, owner Francisco ‘Paco’ Ruiz is a cancer survivor and advocate of all things green, and there’s an excellent selection of vegetable-based dishes including a grilled Portobello torte and baby pumpkin risotto. A staggering list of more than 20 draft beers (including Boulevard Brewing’s Tank 7 and Lagunitas’ Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’), countless bottles and cans, and classic and craft cocktails complete the manly picture.
