‘Elske’ is the Danish word for love, and you’ll certainly fall head over heels for this cool new Scandi-American eatery in Chicago’s West Loop.
Indulge your hygge fantasies in the serenely inviting two-floor space, which features sleek wood, curvy chairs, tactile ceramic tableware, flickering candles, and outdoor dining with a welcoming fireplace.
The long-awaited first offering from husband-and-wife duo and Paul Kahan alums David (Blackbird) and Anna (The Publican) Posey mixes chef-driven new American food with Danish influences and inspiring ingredients. The Noma-esque results are natural, earthy and prettily plated.
Beef tartare, duck liver tart, and glazed short rib with beets will please meat-lovers, while creative dish mixes (think grilled sturgeon with artichoke, lovage and caviar, or soft scrambled eggs with confit chicken thigh and crispy grains) keep adventurous palates tantalised. Elevated comfort food spans some indulgent vegetarian dishes too, such as celeriac risotto with black truffle, and grilled shiitake mushrooms with fava beans, creamed barley and green garlic.
Leave space for dessert, starring quirky confections including frozen fennel candy with mint; kaffir lime custard with strawberries and red verjus; and meringue with buttermilk sorbet, rhubarb and flowers.
