Vintage Wonderland

October 19, 2015
Dovetail
Gone are the days when vintage meant ill-fitting floral frocks with a faint whiff of grandma. Courtesy of well-heeled wunderkind Patricia Field, ‘previously owned’ now means ‘to be worn again’, and there’s no better way of rocking retro than by combining it with on-trend contempo clothing. The problem is, dear hearts, where to find such antique attire without spending days knee-deep in ratty hand-me-downs?

Thankfully, Chi-town’s answer to Ms Field, Julie Ghatan, possesses the gimlet eye necessary to separate the wheat from the chaff and has curated the cream of the crop at her West Town wonderland, Dovetail.

Boasting an excellent assemblage of items new and old, this darling boutique promotes conscious shopping habits by supporting local artisans and discouraging disposable consumerism.

Everything on offer – from scent-sational solid perfumes to Art Deco-era objets d’art, and original 1920s Bakelite baubles to timeless togs – has either been handcrafted in the US or salvaged from an estate sale, flea market or thrift store.

What’s more, Ghatan’s veritable treasure trove of trinkets and tchotchkes plays an important role in the local community, hosting trunk shows for homegrown designers, exhibitions for emerging artists and even cocktail soirées.

Pop along and you’ll soon discover that while fashion might be fleeting, you can’t put a time-limit on style.
