From the James Beard Award-winning One Off Hospitality Group, that brought Chicago top tables like Nico Osteria and the Violet Hour, to name a few, comes Dove’s Luncheonette, an all-day 60s to 70s-themed diner smack bang in the middle of happening neighbourhood Wicker Park. But this is no ordinary all-American diner, folks... With blazing-hot chef Dennis Bernard (Blackbird, The Publican) at the helm, this already rave success is plating up fantastic and imaginative Mexican fare.
The 42-seat space keeps the vibe classic with hexagonal floor tiles, communal counters, leather chrome-trimmed barstools and a vintage jukebox laying down a groovy jazz and soul soundtrack, whereas the food ventures into uncharted territory, with updated LatAm incarnations taking up much of the menu. Early standouts include a vibrant cilantro-heavy seafood ceviche; buttermilk fried chicken with a chorizo verde gravy; and cheese-heaped red chili enchiladas made from roasted chicken thighs, guajillo-ancho sauce, serrano peppers and corn tortillas. Even the drinks list comes from south of the border, with Negra Modelo beer and cocktails including the Palomino, a watermelon-infused Cocchi Rosa, Giffard Pamplemousse liqueur, and soda with aromatic bitters. A retro Mexican diner? Only One Off could pull that off!
