How To… Celebrate CNY in Chi-Town

Art Institute Chicago will share cultural and culinary treats. On 28 Jan (10.30am-4pm), the Peking Opera performs in Griffin Court, along with lion dances and calligraphy demos. Until 11 Feb, you can visit the Thorne Miniature Rooms to see traditional Chinese interiors, bring the smalls for free drop-in art activities, or enjoy a self-guided tour of the collection’s Sino-art roosters, ducks and geese. The Museum Café is dishing up stir-fry and dumplings.
Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade high-fives the Rooster with marching bands, manic dragon and lion dances, vibrant floats and fireworks (1-3pm, 5 Feb). Arrive early for the free action, focused around Chicago’s Chinatown Gate.
It’s not CNY without fluttering fans and illuminated lanterns. Neighborhoods of the World: Chinese New Year Lantern Celebration at Navy Pier (noon-4pm, 12 Feb) offers dreamy costumed folk music and dancing.
Finish with an authentic feast at The Peninsula’s seductive Shanghai Terrace, which serves Zagat-rated Cantonese and Shanghainese delicacies amid 1930s supperclub decor, with terrace and stagger skyline views. From divine dim sum to Peking duck with Mandarin pancakes, plus a lychee-flavoured Shanghai Pink cocktail that puts the happy in New Year!
