Shake It Up

November 02, 2015
Broken Shaker
Yes, the moniker might suggest that their cocktail-crafting skills are a little clumsy, but – as anyone who has been to the James Beard-nominated Miami original will know – the boys behind Broken Shaker are mix-masters of the highest order.

And now, the Windy City's tipple enthusiasts can sample the deliciously inventive libations of bar extraordinaires Elad Zvi and Gabriel Orta, with the opening of the country’s second branch within River North’s new Freehand Chicago.

The clubhouse-style space does away with the tropi-cool aesthetic of its Florida predecessor, The Tokyo Hotel, in favour of a playful yet mature Midwest vibe. A dim-lit lobby outfitted with Navaho throws, totem poles and cosy fireplaces gives way to a wallpapered, banquette-lined space decked out with twee decor accents and a stool-fronted Mid-Century Modern counter.

It’s behind the latter that bar manager Freddie Sarkis (formerly of Celeste) shakes up the svelte selection of 15 unique blends. There are ‘old-school boozy’ options such as the Sherry Cobbler (seasonal fruit, citrus, sherry and rum), hits from the Sunshine State Shaker including a divine cocoa puff-infused Old Fashioned, and native newcomers like the Godmother (a roasted corn reduction with mezcal and herb salt). Ain’t nothing needs fixing here!
