Eat Me, Alice

A Baker’s Tale

Once upon a time in a land not far away, a small artisan bakery opened its doors to the cupcake-craving hordes of Wicker Park, offering breakfast, lunch and a multitude of pretty patisserie fare in a storybook-style setting. A Baker’s Tale, Chicago’s most sophisticated take on the Mad Hatter’s tea party, is a charming, fairytale-worthy café, achieving just the right balance between wonderland whimsy and adult sophistication: think teacups, bowler hat light fittings, and a towering tree blossoming with book-page crafted flowers, all against a warm backdrop of dark wood table-tops, leather booths and velvet armchairs.

Pinkies poised for a cup of Benjamin Tea and hot or iced joe from local roasters Passion House, best accompanied by one of their pastries made fresh every morning, and often with the colourful addition of seasonal fruit. Cute cupcakes range in flavours from blueberry cheesecake to honey-basil, and for the on-trend sweet/salty mix, look no further than their cookies laced with peanut butter, maple-bacon scones, and whiskey-caramel apple pie with a top crust made entirely from crisp tiny hearts. And there’s also a menu to sate savoury cravings, with fresh-made sandwiches and ‘quiche of the day’ (think crumbly butter crust with cilantro, jalapeño, ham and cheese, or roasted red pepper and goat’s cheese), so any hungry Alice will want to fall down this rabbit hole!
