Sound and Vision

April 04, 2016

Why bother with online dating, when you can get intimate with like-minded folk at a packed gig or film? Chicago’s CIMMfest offers endless opportunities to party next to a hottie in the mosh pit, or cosy up to a cutie in the cinema, all while slaking your thirst for culture.

Lasting a fun-packed five days, the eighth annual outing of the Chicago International Movies & Music Festival showcases more than 100 screenings and concerts celebrating movies about music and music about movies (or live performances and DJ sets with a bold visual element).

Originally started by a musician and a filmmaker, it’s now a popular city fixture, descending on eclectic neighbourhoods Wicker Park and Logan Square, and taking over theatres, bars, concert venues, galleries and pop-up spaces.

Headline bands up for grabs include blues/roots legend the Taj Mahal Trio, Afrika Bambaataa (aka the Godfather of Hip Hop), Chicago alt-rock faves Local H, Montreal-based avant-songwriter Tim Hecker, synth-pop/rock act Poliça and feel-good indie rockers Deer Tick. International movies range from concert films and live-score screenings to documentaries, shorts, fiction and music videos, all inspired by music.

If you want to get more nerdy about the scene, attend CIMMcon, an entertainment industry conference offering lively panels, Q&As and presentations, tied in with the festival. Snap up a five-day Fest Pass, Fest + Conference access or VIP Pass. Tune in and turn on…
