In the race for Cali’s hotly contested culinary crown, there have only ever been two serious contenders. Eternal archrivals San Francisco and Los Angeles have been neck and neck for years, but of late it looks as though The City of Angels may well pip The Golden City to the post with a new addition to its flourishing gastro-scape, Stir Market.

 

Inspired by the great food halls of yonder Europe, but infused with modern Californian attitude, Stir Market is the brainchild of master chefs Jet Tila (of The Charleston) and Chris Barnett (from the Relais d’Auteuil in Paris).

 

Sprawling over a 4,000-square-foot warehouse, this Beverly Boulevard bolthole is a vision in industrial-chic with polished concretes, brilliant white-tiled walls, marble counters and communal tables – around which sit some of the city’s most effortlessly cool epicureans.

 

The concept offers a smorgasbord of tasty options, from specialty food stalls serving zingy bites like Moroccan baked eggs and rotisserie chooks to a bakery turning out fresh pastries. Caffeine fiends will find their thirst for crafty brews quenched at a top-notch coffee stop, while the bar serves eight artisanal ales on tap and wines by the glass or bottle. Now, our money’s on LA to take the title!
