The Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game
The first day of the New Year heralds many things beyond the obvious, among them the making of countless ready-to-be-broken resolutions, yet more sore heads and, most importantly, Pasadena’s Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game.
For more than 100 years, around a million Angelenos have been overcoming their hangovers to line the 5.5 mile-long route and cheer on the fabulously floral floats. 2016’s offering will see 44 OTT creations – including those from new participants Los Angeles Lakers and PBS, who will present an homage to the final season of Downton Abbey – plus 19 equestrian units and 20 marching bands, all decked out according to this year’s theme, ‘Find Your Adventure’.
And if you can’t quite muster the energy to rise with the early birds and nab a coveted curbside spot, it’s not the only thing worth getting out of bed for. New Year’s Day also hosts ‘the granddaddy of them all’, the Rose Bowl Game.
First held in 1902, it sees champions of premier collegiate divisions battling it out for supremacy at the iconic arena. Taking to the field on 1 January will be the no.5 CFP-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes and the no.6 CFP-ranked Stanford Cardinal for what promises to be a contest of epic proportions. Hike!
