Cultural Culver

LUXE Itin: Culver City

Originally home to MGM Studios (now Sony Pictures Studios), in the last decade Culver City has gone through a distinct revitalisation with new shops, galleries and restaurants opening in the formally designated Art District, so much so that the The New York Times was prompted to call it a ‘nascent Chelsea’. Here are our favourite must-visits, but avoid Sunday and Monday when many of the galleries are closed.

Start your art fest on Washington Boulevard at Kopelin Del Rio for ‘Fever Dreams’ (until August 24th), a contemporary mixed show of US artists like Mark Licari and Robbie Conal, before hopping along to LeBasse Projects for ‘You Have Diamonds in Your Mind’ (until August 31st) by noted German street artist duo Herakut. Around the corner on S. La Cienega Boulevard you’ll find Honor Fraser where from September 7th performance artist Dawn Kasper and avant-garde photographer Brenna Youngblood will be on show, while a short stroll north will bring you to JK Gallery which reps emerging and established artists in all media. Finally, pop into Walter Maciel where from September 10th you’ll find artist John Bankston who channels the visual and narrative language of colouring books. Stimulated? Why not hold forth over an Old Fashioned at cocktail favourite Mandrake Bar. Sm-ART!
