Labor Day Weekender in LA

August 22, 2017
Labor Day Weekend

We’ve never needed an excuse to eat, drink and make merry, but summer’s last hurrah, Labor Day Weekend, is as good a reason as any. Here’s our guide to ensuring that the last public holiday of the year goes out with a bang (or at least a burger…).

Saturday

Have the tastiest Saturday possible by heading down to The Taste, which gathers together the city’s star restaurants (from humble heroes to big-name acts) for five fabulous food events held over the weekend. Expect more delicious dishes than you can shake a fork at, plus cooking demos, wine seminars, a best-of-the-best drinks list and a buzzing atmos.

Saturday’s sessions kick off at Paramount Pictures Studios with a Field-to-Fork fiesta celebrating LA’s local producers from 12pm; later on, there’s a Dinner With A Twist, hosted by Jonathan Gold and Jenn Harris, aided and abetted by Antonia Lofaso and Marco A. Ramos. In between meals, roll over to the Cinecon Classic Film Festival and catch a flick or two at the handsome, historic Egyptian Theater, sitting pretty on Hollywood Blvd. What’s better than food or films? Food and films, that’s what: step forward Eat|See|Hear, whose roving HD screen travels to different LA locations for alfresco movie screenings every Saturday in summer, together with a gang of resident food trucks and local musicians, who warm the crowd up with live sets before the main event.

Sunday

On Sundays, most Angelenos are sensibly star-fishing on the beach, so why not take adventure of the un-chokka roads and venture out of town? Book a set of wheels via the Peninsula concierge and cruise north up the Pacific Coast Highway through Santa Monica – where you can stop for a caffeine boost at wave-muralled Dogtown Coffee – before you roll up to Malibu. Stroll leisurely along the pier, pausing to admire the mountains meeting the ocean and buff boardriders meeting the breaks below, then drop anchor at family-run Malibu Farm Pier Cafe for a healthy organic lunch.

Refreshed and rebooted, zip over to pristine, crowd-free and pooch-friendly Leo Carillo Beach before driving back the way you came, via oceanfront stunner Geoffrey’s for lobster salad, crab cakes and mimosas (oh my). On your way back to LA, be sure to stop by Rosenthal’s walk-in tasting room, which is happily ensconced in a bijou beachside shack complete with rustic patio and a sip-worthy selection of Malibu Estate and Surfrider wines.

Monday

Public holidays in LA are all about relaxing, so spend the day horizontal, preferably poolside at The Peninsula. Only get vertical again for the hotel’s spoiling spa and special BBQ With A View: a sunset feast featuring brisket tacos, charred branzino, rib-eye with steak sauce, beer-can chicken with cabbage cilantro slaw, and house-made smores. To top it all off, you can expect a generous serve of sublime Santa Monica views...
