La Brea Bakery

Now renowned as the country’s premier producer of delicious artisan breads (available in gourmet food stores and restaurants), La Brea Bakery was the brainchild of pastry chef Nancy Silverton (a 2013 James Beard Award Finalist) when it opened in 1989. It was to bitter disappointment then when LBB announced its temporary closure in December, with fans soon breathing a sigh of relief in early January as they reopened in a new home just one block along. This larger space incorporates both bakery and cafe, where shelves are lined with handmade jams and gourmet cheeses, cookbooks by their famous founder, along with sweet indulgences like macarons, cookies and muffins.

In addition to hot and cold beverages and healthy refuels like salad and soup, their specialty breads are what really create the queues, with a tempting freshly-baked selection of golden ciabatta, focaccia, rounds and baguettes. Alternatively, opt for the ‘take and bake’ Tuscan loaves or Telera rolls to cook at home, or choose a sandwich like the Turkey Avocado with spicy mayo and arugula on country wheat. And with crusty bread favourites including seeded French demi-baguettes with poppy, sesame and amaranth seeds, golden jalapeno-cheddar loaves and Pumpernickel Boule with rye, it’s no surprise this carb haven won the LA Times’ Readers’ Choice Award for the Best of SoCal 2012.
