Cerams With A Conscience

March 14, 2013
Heath Ceramics

When Edith Heath founded her eponymous ceramics brand in 1948 during the Great Depression, it’s unlikely she could’ve known that the style, principles and method of her creations would remain as sought-after and on-trend today, more than 60 years later. Motivated by the intention to ‘make simple, good things for good people’, Edith developed clay and glazes that allowed for an energy-saving single firing of her products, a process that is still used in the original Heath factory in Sausalito, California.

The processes aren’t all that have stood the test of time. Heath products are still made using brown clay mined from the very Sacramento clay-bed Edith selected in 1947, and many of her original designs remain unchanged, cementing Heath as one of the go-to names for authentic mid-Century-style ceramics.

The original, colourful and made-to-order tile collection remains a core segment of the range, as does the iconic tableware, available in a selection of earthy tones with the fuss-free, clean-lined finishes typical of the era. However, the Heath retail offering has also since expanded to include glassware, flatware and knives, linens, lighting and décor from a number of affiliated brands including Commune, David Mellor and Edward Wohl. Responsible and stylish cerams – way to go, Edith!
