While most department store eateries are the culinary equivalent of an already-pillaged sale rack, swish Freds at retail mecca Barneys New York has been a power lunch staple of Manhattan's corporate and style sets for the better part of ten years. And though few could argue the NYC icon hasn’t already seen a lifetime’s worth of movers, shakers and celebrities, it seems the West Coast starlets have beckoned with the restaurant finally jumping cross-country and debuting an outpost in the Barneys New York store in Beverly Hills.
Take the elevator up to the fifth floor – best for avoiding distraction from Stella McCartney and co. – and snag a spot on the sceney heated terrace beset by Hollywood Hills vistas, then order up on Cali-Italian fare like Robiola and truffle oil thin crust pizza, penne di farro with vegan bolognese and crab, shrimp and avocado club sandwiches, plus a few East Coast imports including Chef Mark Strausman’s signature 17-ingredient Madison Avenue salad. The stylishly-outfitted servers can recommend Napa Valley wines to pair, or make like the local lunching ladies and opt for a spiced rum Beverly Hills Sunset cocktail while you mull over the merits of that python Zagliani tote. And for the serious shoppers who just want a speedy mid-retail recharge, NY deli-style pickings like smoked salmon bagels are available on weekends. Get fed, Fred.
