French Fashion Lands Hills-side

November 28, 2013

When French designer Céline Vipiana launched her eponymous made-to-measure children’s footwear label in 1945, it’s unlikely she could have imagined her brand would soon grow to include women’s shoes and accessories, a ready-to-wear fashion line by 1960, and almost 70 years on remain poised at the forefront of the global fashion industry. Though Vipiana’s reign ended in 1997 and the brand was subsequently acquired by the goliath LVMH group, her style and global vision remain ingrained in the Céline philosophy, and was ever-present as the brand celebrated a landmark earlier in 2013 – the opening of its first West Coast flagship.

Like its sartorial offering, the store itself exudes understated elegance, with soft beige walls offset with black and green marble accents. From the racks, dedicated (read: lightning quick) fans can place hands on all the current season’s must-haves, including Céline’s crazy-popular handbag line featuring the winged Trapeze and Trio cross-body bags, plus Luggage totes, Diamond clutches, purses and suede cosmetic pouches. The fall/winter ready-to-wear collection is also here in all its masculine-tinged glory, with everything from wool jackets to cashmere trousers, plus plongé pleated skirts, faux leather peplum tops and silk patchwork dresses adding a dash of edgy femininity. But be warned – you might have to fight off a Kardashian for the sought-after goods.
