It’s been almost two decades since Vincent Vega called out Mia Wallace’s $5 shake in the cult classic Tarantino film Pulp Fiction, but lucky for Vince, his date didn’t take place in 2013 – otherwise that shake could have set him back rather a lot more. Enter The Powder Room, the retro-glam new Hollywood bar from the Libertine group that’s making waves in the neighbourhood courtesy of its most attention-grabbing menu item: a little beverage they like to call the Velvet Goldmine, or as pundits have aptly named it – the $500 milkshake!
 
With local competitors offering an increasingly opulent range of bottles and services, TPR owner John Arakaki and mixologist Adrianne Biggs (ex No Vacancy) came up with this ‘luxurious yet fun’ spin on the classic beverage. So what, pray tell, does a $500 shake comprise? The answer is a take-home Waterford crystal goblet, custom-made dark chocolate ganache from SWEET! Hollywood, Bacardi Reserva Limitarda, D’USSE VSOP cognac, and Tahitian vanilla ice-cream amongst other things, plus of course the key accoutrement – a Swarovski Nirvana Montana crystal ring garnish, which alone normally retails for $190. For those who like their drinks a little less bank-breaking and decidedly crystal-free, there’s a range of other shakes, whiskeys and craft cocktails to tide you over. Purses out!
