Come New Year’s Day when many of us are peeling ourselves out of bed and warily venturing into the sun-drenched streets of Los Angeles, possibly the last thing our throbbing heads need is a full-on brass band followed by hordes of screaming football fans, but the thousands of Angelenos who take to the streets of Pasadena every January 1st may beg to differ. For the USA's oldest bowl game and accompanying parade is a SoCal tradition that’s been going since 1902 and makes a fab outing for families, friends and sport devotees alike.
The 125th Rose Parade – which is bound to make the little terrors yelp with delight – gets off to a spritely 8am start with enormous floral floats, high-stepping white horses adorned in smart saddlery and pretty wreaths, and spirited marching bands making their way to the stadium along 5.5 miles of Colorado Boulevard. Meanwhile at the more respectable hour of 2pm, the Rose Bowl Game kicks off between two of the nation’s top collegiate American football teams which this year will see the Michigan State Spartans pitched against the Stanford Cardinal. So, hangover or no, why not get into the spirit of things – Alka-Seltzer at the ready, Ray Bans on, let’s party like it’s 2014!
