Jon & Vinny's
To Angelenos, Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo are the best friends they’ve probably never met. This dishy duo have become titans of the city’s taste-scape with the likes of Animal, Son of a Gun, Trois Mec and Petit Trois already under their (figuratively) bulging belts. And joining the table as one of the most talked about openings of 2015 is their eponymous red-sauce joint, Jon & Vinny’s.
The interiors are all starkly minimal bleached blond wood, with brutalist banquettes and sconces designed by super-ceramicist Shio Kusaka, plus open kitchen-overlooking bar stools. However, despite all the angles and the early 2000’s hip-hop soundtrack, it somehow manages the warm and welcoming atmos expected of a fam-friendly stomping ground… And the fab food probably has something to do with it, too.
As with their other dining destis, Shook and Dotolo take a relatively simple concept, shine it up and people come a-flocking. Here, it’s elevated Italian-American; think grilled ciabatta garlic bread or pizzas made from dough that’s rested for 48 hours before entering the stone hearth oven and getting charred to a perfect crisp. Toppings-wise, you can’t go wrong with the ‘LA Woman’ (burrata, tomato and basil) or ‘Little Nats’ (pepperoni, tomato, oregano, Caciocavallo and parmesan).
Vini comes courtesy of the lady behind Animal’s much-loved list, Helen Johannesen, who even has her own walk-in wine ‘wardrobe’ on the resto floor. Squisito!
