Gone is the era when it was the exclusive domain of drugstores and thrift shops – these days Downtown is fast cementing its status as LA’s hippest epicentre for independent and exclusive fashion. Already home to the likes of Acne, Tanner Goods and Aussie apothecary Aesop, the neighbourhood has added yet another high-fashion feather to its cap with the arrival of OAK NYC’s flagship LA store. The mecca of monochrome threads opened in March in characteristically understated style, setting up shop in the historic building that once housed iconic Hollywood costume creators L.L. Burns Western Costume Company.
Pristine white walls, soaring ceilings and industrial accents complete the pared-back aesthetic of the cavernous 2,200 sq ft space, which keeps the emphasis on the impeccable, minimalist offering on shelves. In addition to OAK’s house label of men’s and women’s ranges, expect a supporting roster of avant-garde designers both local and international, like Won Hundred, Nanushka Candamill, Kelsi Dagger and Jonathan Simkhai. Head down to stock up on sleek dresses, artfully structured outerwear and the best-made basics, and – if you’re feeling irreverent enough to add a splash of Beverly Hills colour to the toned-down NYC palette – pop upstairs to the Sparkle Factory for bold bling by LA’s own Tarina Tarantino.
