Hollywood Forever Cemetery
Love A-listers? Or think the only good star is a dead one? Either way, you’ll fall for this under-the-radar location that’s home to more celebs than you can shake a selfie stick at.
Avoid the coach-loads at LA’s Hollywood Walk of Fame and opt for some real silver screen glamour at the idyllic Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Here, you’ll find Cecil B. DeMille, Rudolph Valentino, Jayne Mansfield and scores of other movie legends (names to notch up include Mickey Rooney, Douglas Fairbanks, Peter Lorre, Victor Fleming and Charlie Chaplin Jr). Founded in 1899, it’s the final resting place of more Hollywood stars than anywhere else on earth.
Look north and you’ll spy the famous Hollywood Sign atop the Hollywood Hills. Gaze south and you’ll see Paramount Studio’s historic backlot. Maps are available at the flower shop at the main gates to help you navigate the headstones, monuments and mausoleums (one even shaped like a rocket ship). This Insta-worthy real estate has even appeared as a movie and TV show location.
Bands, from Bebel Gilberto to Chvches, play on the cemetery lawn or at its Masonic Lodge (see Facebook for the skinny). And on summer Saturdays Cinespia hosts outdoor screenings at this magical landmark, with pre-show DJs, themed photo booths, picnics and even occasional appearances by directors, filmmakers and stars. ‘The Silence of the Lambs’, anyone?
