Is it proper to put a Dr Seuss-esque botanical sculpture in my living room? It’s a question you might just find yourself asking after some time spent in Creative Registry, the newly opened store of interior decorating guru and former W Hotel head of design Susan Manrao. The 500 sq ft home décor showroom, annexed off Manrao's own West Hollywood design studio, showcases the works of the many artists and craftsmen Manrao has met on her globe-trotting travels.
Most of the eclectic, handcrafted pieces have been chosen for their singular character and simple beauty, but there are plenty of Manrao’s trademark conversation-starting curiosities on show too. Expect to see one-off art creations by Daniel Heath, sculptures from Little World Design, and bespoke woodcraft furniture by Hawaii-based designer Kristin Mae Brown. Manrao’s own range of soft furnishings and Paul Smith fabric cushions are also on show along with an ever-changing line-up of covetable antique finds – picture a feathered admiral’s hat from the American Civil War era, or perhaps a pair of vintage fencing facemasks. Before you go be sure to take a peek behind the fringe curtain wall for a glimpse of the master tastemaker herself at work, probably giving a Victorian birdcage a spruce or brushing the dust off a Grand Tour steamer trunk. Quirky but cool!
