A modern West Coast reimagining of a traditional Tuscan trattoria, Santa Monica’s CiBOTECA is a one-stop shop for all things Italian and edible: part sandwich shop, part coffee house, with a wine bar and patisserie thrown in for good measure. The white walls and polished concrete floors of this sleek café-deli are as crisp as a good crostini, and the many glass display cases sit poised and packed with full-flavoured and fuss-free Italian classics.
CiBOTECA’s modus operandi is the humble panini: 16 different types are on offer including Veal Milanese with shaved parmesan and Dijon mustard; or speck with porcini-truffle cream and Fontina. Piccolo pastry chef Yukari Kamiya keeps the patisserie stocked with cream-filled éclairs and six types of mousse (the chocolate and banana is a must), while local roaster Caffe Luxxe provides the beans for a respectable cappuccino. If you’d rather do your eating out in the ceaseless California sunshine, food and drinks are also available to-go. Nab some arancini and a few freshly made salads – maybe a bottle of Chianti or two – and head down the road for a lazy beachfront picnic. There are plenty of shady spots in the International Chess Park which is prime property for people-watching and has picture-perfect views of the Santa Monica pier. Bravo!
