Men are often underrepresented in the realm of style, with most high street stores either geared entirely towards women, or touting a largely female-centric rosta with a cursory selection of toys to keep the menfolk happy – but thankfully Alchemy Works, the latest addition to the Downtown fashion edit, has flipped that idea on its head by creating a stylish cave dedicated mainly to men with only a modest selection of female frippery (where else would you expect to find a rare 1959 Fiat Abarth Spyder adorning the centre of a showroom?!). And as creative director of the popular Apolis just down the street, this is not the first time owner Raan Parton has made ripples in the Los Angeles retail scene either.
True to Parton’s form, Alchemy Works is not only a space for clothes shopping, but also a rotating gallery and event space for the local creative community, currently showcasing surfer/photographer Will Adler’s collection of seascapes and Tim Campbell’s sleek bronze cube installations. The California-minded stock includes longboards, leather weekend holdalls, shoes, jewellery, and sweaters – basically anything a man needs for a stylish LA weekend. Covetable local and international labels include Bellroy, Hill-Side, Armor Lux, M.Nii, Weiss Watch, and Gitman Vintage, while grooming products come courtesy of Imperial Barber, modish magazines from Kinfolk and Darling, and even homeware (gasp!) is available from Fog Linen. Oh, boy!
